Purbeck students call for better transport
Students at Purbeck School have said that the lack of funded transport after the age of sixteen is making it harder for them to stay in education until they turn eighteen.
They raised the matter during a visit that focused on their experiences and the challenges they face day to day.
Vikki Slade, the MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, also toured the school’s new Purbeck Complex Communication Base and later met younger pupils for a question and answer session.
She took their concerns about travel to Parliament, where she asked ministers to extend funded school transport to cover all students who must stay in education.
She said she was disappointed with the response from the Government, adding that it was unfair to expect local councils to take on the responsibility without proper support. She also said it was important to listen to young people and understand the pressures they experience.
A youth conversation event is being held on 28 November for those aged sixteen and over who want to raise issues, ask questions and share views about life in the community.
