More funding for Bournemouth universities

More than £5.6 million in government funding is being directed into Bournemouth’s higher education institutions to expand specialist facilities and address key skills gaps in the local workforce.

Bournemouth University will receive £2,277,840 to create a Cyber Competence Centre offering upgraded facilities, an AI-powered Security Operations Centre and new training spaces designed to support digital learning and strengthen Dorset’s small business economy.

Arts University Bournemouth has been awarded £1,225,432 to enhance Bournemouth Film School, with investment in post-production, portable equipment, studio lighting and virtual production areas to support collaboration and meet creative industry training needs.

Health Sciences University in Bournemouth East will use £2,136,638 to build modern simulated workspaces, including an Oral Health Simulation Suite, a Diagnostic Radiography and Multi-Use Simulation Ward, an immersive VR room and a Digital Delivery Suite.

The funding forms part of the government’s Strategic Priorities Grant and is intended to support higher education projects that reflect the needs of regional employers and contribute to long-term economic growth. It sits within a £92.14 million package for the financial year 2025 to 2026, shared between sixty providers across the country.

Jessica Toale MP said the announcement reflects the strength of local higher education and the role the universities play in supporting the area’s economy. She said the new funding would help develop skills in cyber security and the creative industries, which are important for Bournemouth’s future growth.

Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said the investment would help build the workforce needed by key sectors and ensure education keeps pace with employer and societal needs.
