Residents invited to name local gritters
Residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being invited to help name the council’s gritting vehicles as the winter service begins its seasonal work.
BCP Council has launched a public call for creative names, encouraging people to visit its social media pages and share their ideas for the fleet.
The council says the light-hearted competition aims to bring some interest to the colder months while highlighting the work the highways service carries out to keep roads safe in icy weather.
Councillor Richard Herrett said this is a simple way for people to get involved and learn more about the teams who maintain the road network during freezing conditions. He said the teams often work through the night in challenging weather to ensure key routes remain safe for residents travelling across the area.
With more than thirteen vehicles made up of fixed and demountable gritters, supported by four thousand tonnes of dry rock salt, the service covers around seven hundred and eighty miles of roads from the first sign of frost. Road temperatures are monitored using weather stations across the region, which helps determine where and when gritting is needed.
The competition opens on Thursday 20 November, with the selected names set to appear on the vehicles in early December.
