Advice issued as freezing conditions arrive

Residents across BCP are being advised to take steps now to avoid burst pipes as freezing conditions are expected over the coming days. Bournemouth Water says cold weather can quickly freeze water in pipes, leading to splits that cause leaks, flooding and disruption at home.

The company has reminded people that when water turns to ice it expands by nearly ten per cent, stopping normal flow and placing pressure on pipework. Even recently installed pipes can be affected by frozen water.

Martin Pipe, Customer Leakage Manager at Bournemouth Water, said that bursts increase every winter and teams work continuously to keep supplies running. He added that residents can reduce the risk of damage by preparing their homes early and following simple checks.

People are being encouraged to insulate exposed pipes in lofts, garages and gardens and to make sure they know where the internal stop tap is located so they can turn off the supply if needed. The company also recommends leaving heating on low when away, ensuring boilers are serviced, bleeding radiators and keeping the details of a trusted plumber available.

Bournemouth Water has also highlighted that underground service pipes can be affected when frozen ground shifts. Residents may notice water escaping in gardens or reduced pressure, although some leaks are not visible. Service pipes on private property must be maintained by the homeowner, and insurance may cover repair costs. A list of private contractors is available through WaterSafe.

If water stops flowing, people are asked to check whether neighbours are affected. If not, their own pipes may be frozen. Residents should look for signs of splits, turn off the internal stop tap and avoid switching on heating systems to thaw frozen pipes. Cold taps can be opened to drain the system, and frozen sections can be warmed gently with a towel or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel.

Once thawed, taps should be turned off and the stop tap slowly reopened. Pipes must be checked again under pressure before switching on water heating appliances. Anyone who finds damage should contact a reputable plumber, with approved contractors listed through WaterSafe.

Further guidance on cold weather preparation, including information about responsibilities for pipework inside and outside the home, is available on Bournemouth Water’s website.
