Christmas rink faces planning review

Bournemouth’s ice rink opened last week but now faces refusal of planning permission after officers raised several concerns.

They say the application for temporary structures in the Lower Gardens did not include key details needed for the planning process, and noted the unauthorised removal of a cherry tree as well as no information about meeting statutory biodiversity rules.

The proposals cover the ice rink, two marquees, an alpine chalet and a games stall from late October to late January on a site that includes a grade II listed park and sits partly within a flood zone.

Councillor Stephen Bartlett objected, saying the development would cause harm and reduce use of the gardens.

A BCP Council spokesperson said the authority values the event but must respect the planning process.

Councillor Mike Cox said the recommendation followed legislation and a complaint, adding that the administration supports the rink and hopes the committee considers whether refusal is proportionate.
