Consortium welcomes Sandbanks toll changes

A consortium of Dorset councils has welcomed the Secretary of State’s decision to approve changes to the Bournemouth-Swanage Ferry Toll Revision Order following a public inquiry earlier this year.

The final order removes the proposed road toll for Ferry Road, meaning residents and visitors can continue to reach the Studland peninsula without extra charges. Councillor Ben Wilson, Dorset Council Ward Member for South East Purbeck, said this protects access to the area’s natural and cultural attractions.

He also praised the decision to reduce toll increases for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists from £1.75 to £1.18, saying it supports active travel and healthier transport choices.

Although the consortium expressed disappointment that car tolls will still rise, it welcomed the retention of bulk ticket discounts, which help regular travellers and recognise those who depend on the ferry for work or daily journeys.

Councillor Wilson added that all consortium members remain committed to maintaining a sustainable and reliable ferry service.

They expect the ferry company to be transparent about its plans and to replace the existing vessel on schedule to secure the long-term future of the crossing.

He thanked everyone who took part in the inquiry, saying their contributions ensured local views were properly considered in the final decision.
