Dorset Council sets £115m road upgrade plan
Dorset Council has outlined a major investment programme that could see up to £115 million spent on improving the county’s roads over the next four years.
The new Highways Capital Programme Strategy aims to make journeys safer, greener, and more reliable for residents and visitors across Dorset.
The plan sets out how the council could benefit from national funding, including the Local Transport Grant, the Highways Maintenance Block, and a new government fund for bridges and key structures.
Local projects making the list include the A347 Ringwood Road Ferndown – Trickett’s Cross – Penny’s Hill Active Travel Improvement and Road Maintenance at a cost of £2m.
So far, £15.5 million has already been confirmed for road and cycleway projects between 2026 and 2030, with more funding expected. Most of this money will come from the Department for Transport and other central sources, not from local council tax.
If current levels continue, Dorset could receive £100 million for road maintenance alone, allowing a steady and long-term approach to caring for the network.
The council is using technology and road data to plan smarter maintenance, reduce waste, and use more sustainable materials. It is also trialling low-carbon and recycled materials to help roads cope with hotter summers and heavier rainfall.
Councillor Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said the plan “is about delivering real improvements for Dorset’s communities” and that preparation now will mean projects can start quickly once funding is confirmed.
The Highways Capital Programme Strategy will be considered by Cabinet on 11 November.
