MP urges views on pub rule changes
Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale is urging residents, landlords, and community groups to take part in a government consultation aimed at cutting outdated licensing rules that have held back pubs and bars.
The consultation, which closes at midday on 6 November, seeks views on how to make it simpler for venues to serve food outside, host live music, and run local events while maintaining strong public safety standards.
It follows nine key recommendations from the Government’s Licensing Taskforce, focusing on modernising alcohol licensing and removing unnecessary barriers for hospitality businesses.
Jessica Toale said she wants Bournemouth’s pubs to continue to thrive both as local businesses and as important parts of community life. She added that the government had already taken steps to help the sector by cutting business rates, reducing alcohol duty on draught products, and providing support for community pubs.
She said: “We’re asking for your views on how we can modernise outdated licensing rules that have been holding back our locals. Whether you’re a landlord, a regular, or someone who cares about our high streets, I’d urge you to take part.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the plans would help pubs and bars “thrive” by cutting red tape, boosting footfall, and making it easier for venues to host community events.
The consultation is open to licensed businesses, trade bodies, councils, residents’ groups, and members of the public.
