Police and fire share Halloween safety tips

Police and fire officers across Dorset are urging everyone to stay safe and considerate this Halloween.

Dorset Police is asking those celebrating to do so respectfully, reminding trick-or-treaters to only visit homes that are clearly decorated and welcoming. People are also encouraged to think of more vulnerable neighbours who may be alarmed by knocks at the door.

Chief Superintendent and BCP Commander Heather Dixey said officers want everyone to enjoy Halloween but to think about how their actions affect others. Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick added that communities can have fun while still being considerate of those who prefer not to celebrate.

The Force is also asking retailers to stay alert when selling items such as flour, eggs and alcohol to help reduce anti-social behaviour.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding people not to let Halloween turn dangerous. They have warned about the fire risks linked to fancy dress costumes, many of which do not meet the same flame resistance standards as clothing.

Home Fire Safety Manager Sarah Moore said the aim is to help people celebrate safely, adding that accidents can happen when candles or fireworks are used near costumes or decorations.

The Fire Service suggests using battery-powered candles, avoiding open flames, and teaching children to stop, drop and roll if their clothes catch fire. Parents are also advised to check costume labels for safety marks and to buy from reputable retailers.

Both services are encouraging everyone to have fun, stay aware, and help keep Dorset safe this Halloween.
