BCP Council launches local energy plan
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has unveiled its new Local Area Energy Plan on the International Day of Climate Action.
The plan sets out a fifteen-year roadmap to secure sustainable and reliable energy for residents and businesses while reducing carbon emissions across the three towns.
Developed independently, the report identifies the challenges facing the area and outlines clear actions to support the transition away from gas heating and petrol or diesel vehicles.
It also highlights opportunities for renewable solutions such as solar panels, ground-source heating, and electric vehicle infrastructure.
An official launch event was held at the BCP Civic Offices this week, bringing together MPs, businesses, community leaders and energy experts to discuss the plan’s priorities and future collaboration.
Councillor Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy, told Bournemouth One the plan demonstrates the scale of action required: “It’s a really exciting opportunity to be clear about what we need to do, enthuse others and work together towards a more sustainable future for all.”
BCP Council is one of the first two local authorities in the South West, alongside Cornwall Council, to complete a Local Area Energy Plan. The document will guide investment, retrofit homes, promote active travel, and strengthen the local energy network.
Report lead Joe McQuillien said the plan provides a robust, evidence-based roadmap for achieving net zero by 2045 while also improving air quality, travel options, and job opportunities.
