Bournemouth lecturer honoured for science outreach
A Bournemouth University lecturer has been recognised for her dedication to making science accessible to local communities.
Professor Genoveva Esteban has been named a winner of the “Recognising Excellence in Volunteering in South West England” award by STEM Learning. The award celebrates her outstanding work in public engagement, including school and community events that make science fun and approachable for all ages.
Alongside her teaching, Professor Esteban co-organises the Dorchester Science Festival, which was also honoured at the same awards. Over the past year, her projects have included Wild Wednesday at Sculpture by the Lakes, Dipping into Pond Life with Dr George McGavin and Dorset Wildlife Trust, and the Family Science Day at Dorset Museum, which attracts around 800 visitors each year.
Professor Esteban said she believes outreach helps people of all ages understand how science is part of everyday life. She added that working with schools encourages curiosity, builds trust, and helps inspire the next generation of scientists.
The awards were announced through STEM Learning’s STEM Ambassador programme, funded by UK Research and Innovation, which supports volunteers to share real-world science experiences across the UK.
