BCP Council secures £2m to tackle homelessness
People at risk of homelessness across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will benefit from a major £2 million funding boost secured by BCP Council.
The grant, announced to coincide with World Homeless Day, will help the council prevent homelessness, improve housing options and support those living in temporary accommodation.
The funding comes from the Government’s Rough Sleeping Prevention and Recovery Grant, with £400,000 allocated to strengthen partnerships with local voluntary and community organisations. A further £164,000 will be used to support children currently living in temporary housing.
Councillor Kieron Wilson, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Regulatory Services, said the funding recognises the scale of the challenge facing local authorities and will make a real difference to local families.
He said the council has worked hard to reduce the number of families living in bed and breakfast accommodation but added that “too many children are still in homes that are not permanent”. He said the new funding will help improve their quality of life and prevent more children from experiencing homelessness.
Councillor Wilson added that the grant will also enable the council to offer tailored support to people sleeping rough, work more closely with landlords and partners, and ensure everyone has a safe and secure home.
