Independent bookshop to open in Westbourne Arcade

A new independent bookshop will open its doors in Bournemouth this weekend.

The Mysterious Bookcase, based at 6 Westbourne Arcade, will open on Saturday 11th October, which also marks Bookshop Day. The shop is set within a Grade II listed building in the heart of the arcade.

Run by Ally and Matt, who have been selling books online for three years, the shop features floor-to-ceiling shelves, comfortable seating, and a hand-picked selection of fiction for adults and young adults, with a focus on fantasy and mystery.

The pair became well known online for their ‘blind date with a book’ packages, which include wrapped books and small gifts. Their creative approach to bookselling has built a loyal following since their idea went viral in 2023.

Ally and Matt said the new store reflects their love of reading and connection: “When our packages went viral, we realised how many people wanted to share their passion for reading with us. Westbourne Arcade felt like the perfect home for a space where readers can relax, explore, and find something special.”

Amy Bradley from the Booksellers Association welcomed the new addition to Bournemouth’s high street, saying it shows how independent bookshops are using social media and creativity to reach new readers and build communities.

The Mysterious Bookcase opens on Saturday 11th October, with regular hours from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
