Young adults with SEND given chance at Amazon Poole
Young adults with special educational needs and disabilities are being offered internships at Amazon’s large Poole depot.
The South West Regional Assessment Centre is recruiting four more people aged 18 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan to join its Supported Internship programme, which starts this month. The scheme lasts one academic year and combines real work experience with on-site tailored learning.
Interns will spend 70 per cent of their time in work rotations at the Sterte Avenue West site and 30 per cent in education, including maths, English and customer service qualifications. Each day begins with classroom learning before moving into the warehouse, with ongoing support from Amazon mentors, tutors and job coaches.
Supported Internship Tutor Charlotte Jones said the programme gives young people “real workplace skills in a modern warehouse environment” while building confidence and independence.
Harry Acton, 22 and from Broadstone, is among those taking part. He said he is looking forward to the rotations and hopes to secure a full-time role at the end of the scheme.
Discovery, which works alongside SWRAC and Amazon, will also provide job coaching and skills support. Delivery Station Manager Julian Gomez said the initiative “creates meaningful opportunities and pathways into employment” for young people.
Four spaces remain available for anyone wishing to apply.
