BCP Labour vows to block town councils
BCP Labour says it will continue to oppose plans for new town councils in Bournemouth after consultation results showed the idea has been rejected.
Councillor Patrick Canavan, Leader of the Labour Group, has written to Council Leader Millie Earl, making clear his group will not support the creation of town or parish councils.
He said: “I have written to Councillor Earl making it clear that my group will continue to oppose this idea as there is absolutely no case for new parish councils anywhere in Bournemouth.”
Councillor Canavan said the administration’s suggestion of creating parish councils to deal with financial pressures would simply pass extra costs onto residents. He added: “Tell you what, let’s create a few parish councils that can charge additional council tax. Well, thanks but no thanks.”
He also backed Councillor Gavin Wright’s concerns but said the focus should be on ensuring the council dismisses the plans.
The Community Governance Review considered proposals for new parish and town councils across Bournemouth and Poole but consultation responses showed residents had rejected the idea.
