Local drivers urged to take bus Monday

Drivers across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being asked to take the bus instead of using their cars on Monday.

World Car Free Day takes place on Monday 22 September, with the aim of easing congestion and improving air quality by promoting public transport, cycling and walking.

Bus operator Morebus is encouraging people to try its services and is highlighting the impact fewer cars can have on the environment and people’s health.

“As a local bus operator, it stands to reason that we want more people to travel with us, but there is a very serious message behind Car Free Day,” said Morebus head of communications Nikki Honer.

She added that reducing traffic even for a day leads to lower air pollution and improved respiratory health, with just one double decker bus having the potential to replace up to 75 cars on local roads.

The company has invested in new vehicles carrying the latest Euro 6 engines, which release fewer emissions than the average new diesel car. Timetable changes have also been introduced to improve convenience and comfort for passengers.

Morebus is offering app users an introductory discount on its Dayrider ticket on World Car Free Day, giving unlimited travel at a reduced rate. The ongoing £3 fare cap across the network also remains available for those making single journeys.

Morebus says it hopes new passengers will continue to use the service after giving it a try on Monday.
