New 20mph limit coming to Wimborne streets

Wimborne will soon see new 20 mile per hour zones introduced on two roads this autumn.

The changes will be on Allenview Road and Burts Hill following community support for lower speeds.

This route is used as a shortcut to avoid traffic lights in the town centre.

Dorset Council confirmed the move following a public consultation where residents shared their views on the proposal. The new signs will be installed during late September and October.

The decision comes as part of Dorset Council’s 20mph policy, which since 2022 has allowed town and parish councils to apply for lower limits where there is community support.

Councillor Jon Andrews, Cabinet Member for Place Services, said the schemes were driven by residents’ concerns. He explained that each request goes through a detailed assessment and must show clear community backing before being approved.

Alongside Wimborne, four other villages will also see 20mph zones introduced this autumn. Signs are being put in place in Child Okeford and Winterbourne Kingston by mid to late September, with Cheselbourne and Okeford Fitzpaine scheduled for later in the year.

The council has stressed that the policy does not make 20mph the default on all local roads. Instead, it ensures a consistent approach where the change is affordable, supported, and enforceable by police.

Further applications for reduced speed limits, including in Beaminster, Upton, St Leonards, Lyme Regis and other communities, will go out for public consultation in October. Residents will be invited to share their views on those proposals.
