Residents urged to check alarms after Poole fire
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms after a fire in Poole.
Crews were called to the property at 10.10pm on 6 September, with fire engines from Westbourne, Hamworthy and Poole attending along with the aerial ladder platform from Westbourne.
When firefighters arrived, they found the blaze on the first floor of the home. Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using two hose reel jets and one safety jet.
Station Manager Daniel Perrett said the smoke alarms in the property gave the occupants vital warning to escape safely. He said: “The property did have working smoke alarms which alerted the occupants. Had that not been the case, the outcome could have been far worse. Every home should have a working smoke alarm on every level, and these should be tested regularly.”
He added that the people inside had acted correctly by leaving immediately and staying out until firefighters told them it was safe to return.
The service is encouraging all households to think about fire safety and take up its offer of free Safe and Well visits. These visits provide advice on areas such as cooking, use of candles, electric blankets, overloaded sockets and chimneys. Staff can also fit or replace smoke alarms if needed.
More information, including how to request a Safe and Well visit, is available on the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service website.
