Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has faced one of its busiest summers on record, already dealing with more than 900 wildfires – the same as the whole of 2022, previously its worst year.
Grass, crop, and heathland fires have been sparked by prolonged dry weather and strong winds, with a major incident declared at Holt Heath in Dorset. National fire crews were drafted in to support local teams.
Chief Fire Officer Andy Cole said crews had worked “around the clock in arduous conditions” and warned that government proposals in its Fire Funding Review could see the loss of thousands of firefighter posts nationally. He also raised the prospect of local station closures unless more money is raised through council tax.
DWFRS is urging the public to play their part by avoiding barbecues and open fires in the countryside, properly disposing of cigarettes, and reporting any signs of fire quickly. Beach visitors are also being reminded that flares, campfires, and barbecues can easily trigger cliffside blazes.
