Roads remain closed around Holt Heath in east Dorset as firefighters continue to tackle a large wildfire in and around the Holt Heath National Nature Reserve.
Dorset Council says the closures are in place to keep the public safe and allow Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to carry out their work. Limited access is being given to residents, but members of the public are urged to follow diversion and road closure signs.
Emergency services are reminding drivers not to move any signs, as they are in place to protect both road users and crews working in the area. People are also being asked to avoid the Holt Heath area if possible and make space for emergency vehicles.
A number of large fire appliances remain in use, with the service reporting good progress overnight despite a reduced crew due to the hot working conditions. Multiple crews returned to the scene this morning to continue damping down the area and managing hotspots that have been identified.
National resources from other fire and rescue services have joined local teams to help bring the incident under control. Support is also being provided by Bournemouth Water and the NHS, ensuring crews have access to welfare facilities and hydration while working in the high temperatures.
Work is continuing with partner agencies to manage the incident, and the fire service is encouraging residents to stay informed through updates on its website.
The wildfire has already covered a significant area of heathland, and operations are expected to continue until the site is made safe. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue say avoiding the area will help their efforts and reduce the risk to the public.
