Dorset’s Lord Lieutenant, Professor Michael Dooley, has been appointed as a Pro Chancellor at Bournemouth University.
The role will see Professor Dooley join the university’s Chancellery team, which represents the institution at ceremonial and public events. He is already a visiting Professor at the university and brings decades of experience from his medical and public service career.
Professor Dooley has worked as a consultant gynaecologist in both London and Dorset, including roles with the Royal Household, the British Equestrian Federation, and during the London 2012 Olympics. He has also previously served as High Sheriff of Dorset.
As the King’s representative in the county, Professor Dooley regularly supports local and national charities and promotes the message of harmony in communities.
He will serve alongside existing Chancellery members, including Chancellor Dr Kate Adie CBE, Dr Emma Egging OBE, and Professor Richard Conder. He replaces Dr Ann Abraham and Dr Jennifer Coombs, DL, who completed their terms last year.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Alison Honour welcomed the appointment and thanked the outgoing Pro Chancellors for their support.
Professor Dooley said it was “an honour” to be appointed and described the role as a “calling” to help students and staff reach their potential.
He lives in Dorset with his wife Barbara and their family, which includes three children and seven grandchildren.
