Julia’s House hospice in Dorset to expand end of life care suite

Julia’s House has received planning permission to extend its children’s hospice in Corfe Mullen to support more families in need of specialist care, including those whose children are approaching the end of their life.

Work on the site is due to begin in September and aims to be completed by early 2026.

The extension will enlarge the hospice’s Mermaid Suite and create a private entrance, allowing families to spend time together in a more homely and private space during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Other changes to the hospice include improvements to the second floor, with a larger bathroom and specialist equipment to help older children access the bathroom and bedroom with more independence and privacy. A new external ramp will also be added to improve accessibility at the main entrance.

The project is being supported by the Valentine Trust, which has extended the lease by 25 years, and by architects Corstorphine & Wright, who have provided their services as a gift in kind. The extension is funded by Government capital investment in hospices and support from other trusts and foundations.

Julia’s House recently held the Great Tail Trail across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, featuring giant mermaid tails to raise awareness of the care offered through the hospice’s Mermaid Suite.
