Work to rebuild the sluice channel that feeds Poole Park lagoon will begin later this month to help preserve one of the area’s key wildlife habitats.
The project, led by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council, will see the structure beneath Baiter Park and the railway line reconstructed after heavy corrosion was found in the metal piling. The sluice, built in the 1960s, allows saltwater from Poole Harbour to reach the lagoon.
Maintaining the lagoon’s high salt content is essential to support the rare and endangered species that live in the mudflats and water. Poole Harbour is internationally recognised as a haven for over-wintering birds and has both SSSI and SPA status.
The work is scheduled to take place between 28 July and November this year and is being funded through the council’s Community Infrastructure Levy.
Councillor Andy Hadley said the repairs will support biodiversity and ensure the lagoon remains a valuable facility for both residents and wildlife.
To protect over-wintering birds, the work is being carried out in summer and autumn, outside the period when they are most likely to be disturbed.
