A large fire has severely damaged a derelict building on Christchurch Road in Longham, formerly part of Dudsbury Golf Club.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said the building was well alight when crews arrived shortly after 6pm yesterday.

Around 40 firefighters attended the scene from stations including Redhill Park, Springbourne, Poole, Westbourne, Christchurch, Bere Regis and Blandford.

An aerial ladder platform from Westbourne and a support unit from Hamworthy also took part in the operation. Crews used hose reel and main jets to tackle the blaze.

The service warned local residents to keep their windows and doors shut due to large amounts of smoke in the area.

Firefighters remained at the scene into the evening, with some appliances starting to leave by 9pm. No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
