Visually impaired group kayak from Studland Bay to Old Harry

A group of visually impaired people from Dorset Blind Association took on a sea kayaking adventure from Studland Bay to Old Harry Rocks earlier this month, supported by Dorset-based outdoor company Land & Wave.

The activity on Monday 9 June paired six participants with trained instructors who acted as sighted guides in double kayaks. For many involved, it was their first time trying a water-based sport.

The route followed a stretch of calm sea and sunshine along the Jurassic Coast, with guides describing the cliffs and features along the way.

Dorset Blind Association’s Sam Baker said it was “a truly special” day for the group, with members enjoying the setting and the support of skilled instructors.

This is the second time the two organisations have worked together, following a rock climbing session in last year’s fundraiser with blind adventurer and BBC presenter Amar Latif.

Land & Wave says it is committed to training instructors to guide people with a range of needs and is working with the charity to plan more inclusive outdoor experiences.

Both organisations hope to offer more land and water-based adventures to members in the future.
