A Dorset Police officer has been dismissed without notice after admitting to a violent offence that took place while he was off duty in Weymouth last year.
PC Tyler McWalter was removed from his role following a public misconduct hearing held at Dorset Police Headquarters in Winfrith on Tuesday 20 May.
It followed his admission to a charge of intentional strangulation at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court in March this year, relating to an incident in the early hours of Saturday 14 September 2024 on The Esplanade in Weymouth.
The hearing, led by Chief Constable Amanda Pearson, found that PC McWalter’s actions amounted to gross misconduct. He was accused of attacking a member of the public by putting his arm around the person’s neck and pulling them to the ground.
As a result of the outcome, he has also been added to the national police barred list.
Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell said it was “very disappointing” to hear of such behaviour and stressed that officers must maintain high standards, even when not on duty.
She added: “We remain absolutely committed to ensuring officers whose actions fall below the high standards we expect of them are held to account.”
The force says anyone can raise concerns about police conduct by contacting Dorset Police directly or through the Independent Office for Police Conduct or Crimestoppers.
