MP welcomes government’s new £50 million support network for veterans

A new UK-wide support network for veterans has been welcomed by the MP for Bournemouth West.

Jessica Toale was speaking after joining local residents in marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The scheme, called VALOUR, is backed by £50 million funding.

It will help make it easier for former service personnel to access care, housing, employment and welfare support in their local area.

There are more than 3,600 veterans living in the Bournemouth West constituency.

Among the VE Day 80th anniversary events attended by the MP was a street celebration on Landseer Road in Westbourne, organised by Bournemouth Coastal BID, and a special cream tea at Kinson Community Centre.

Jessica Toale said: “VE Day gives us a moment to pause and pay tribute to the generation who served our country with such courage and selflessness.

“It was a real privilege to be out in the community this week, joining residents and veterans in Westbourne and Kinson as we remembered their legacy together.

“It’s also a reminder of our ongoing duty to those who have served.

“That’s why I’m proud to support the Government’s launch of VALOUR – a £50 million investment that will help veterans across the UK get the right support, more easily and more locally.

“With more than 3,600 veterans in Bournemouth West, this will be an important step forward in joining up the support they can access, and most importantly, it will be shaped by veterans themselves.”

Under the VALOUR system, new Regional Field Officers will work with local authorities, charities and service providers to ensure better coordination across health, housing, employment and welfare services.

The aim is to move away from a postcode lottery and deliver consistent, high-quality support no matter where veterans live.

The first VALOUR-recognised support centres will open from next year.
