Pier Journal expands across Dorset with 10th edition launch

Pier Journal has released its 10th edition and expanded its distribution to venues across Dorset.

The 100-page Spring/Summer 2025 edition launched at the weekend, alongside a sold-out event at Koh Thai in Bournemouth during the Bournemouth Writing Festival.

More than 1,000 copies were given out at the festival, with thousands more now available in cafes, shops and venues across the county.

Founded in 2022 by Sammy Murphy, the community journal features local people, events, and organisations through print, online content and events.

The journal has grown steadily since Laura Williams became Editorial Director, and Pier is now officially operating as its own volunteer-run company.

This edition is the largest so far, with the print run doubled and the highest ever amount paid to freelance writers, photographers, designers and illustrators.

Sammy Murphy said: “What started as an idea to celebrate local creative culture is now a growing community of changemakers. At its heart is our 100-page journal now reaching thousands of people across the whole of Dorset.”

The journal’s content now includes topics such as community, health, wellbeing, and a dedicated festival guide.

Laura Williams said the support from readers and partners has been vital, allowing the team to expand into new areas such as guidebook production, campaign delivery, and website creation.

Pier Journal is available for free at local venues, and for the first time, membership options have been introduced for individuals and businesses.

New subscribers receive the journal directly by post, with early supporters including Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth One and Arts University Bournemouth.
