Bournemouth group leads walking football sessions for Parkinson’s community growth

Parkinson’s Warriors in Bournemouth are among 12 clubs across England now operating walking football sessions for people living with Parkinson’s.

The sessions were supported by a £10,000 grant from Parkinson’s UK to the Walking Football Association, helping grassroots clubs offer regular activities without the need for specialist equipment.

Since the project began in 2023, more than 100 people across England have taken up walking football regularly, with close to 200 players now attending sessions.

Director at the Walking Football Association, Stuart Langworthy, said: “We wanted to show that anyone could play the sport and have access to a more local, fun, friendly, safe and inclusive exercise class.”

Anna Castiaux, Physical Activity Programme Lead at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Being active can be one of the best ways to help you live well with Parkinson’s and it’s great to see that walking football continues to be so popular amongst the Parkinson’s community.”

Other clubs and community foundations involved include Arsenal in the Community, Sunderland’s Foundation of Light and Eastleigh Walking Football Club.

Sessions have also launched in Derby, Blackburn, Worcester and Wigan, with additional advice and support provided to groups in Coventry, Gloucester, Taunton and Newcastle.

The project continues to work towards expanding access to walking football across more communities in England.
