Planning approved for ten new coastal homes at Steamer Point

Ten new coastal homes are set to be built at Steamer Point in Christchurch, following planning approval for a development by Pennyfarthing Homes.

The new homes will replace a collection of derelict buildings on a 1.3-hectare brownfield site at the western edge of the Steamer Point Nature Reserve.

The location offers sea views and is surrounded by protected mature trees, which will be retained as part of a landscape-led design.

The scheme was designed by David James Architects and includes measures to support biodiversity, such as new planting and efforts to limit light into an established bat corridor.

The homes are positioned to make the most of sea views and the natural setting.

Four properties will feature an ‘upside-down house’ layout, placing living areas on the upper floor, with external staircases connecting to the gardens.

The remaining six homes will be set back from the cliff edge and designed with more traditional layouts, still focusing on sea views.

Construction is expected to start in autumn 2025, with completion scheduled for early 2027.

Ben Arnold, Land and Planning Director at Pennyfarthing Homes, said: “We are delighted to have finally been given the go-ahead for this landmark development.”
