Golf skills came to the fore when 12 youngsters from a Bournemouth school were guests at a Dorset golf club.
The children, from Bethany CE VA Junior School in Boscombe, spent a day at the 18 hole, par 72 course at Remedy Oak Golf Club.
Organised by Variety the Children’s Charity, the Year 6 pupils were transported in the Sunshine Coach, presented in 2023 by Shan Seewooruthun and the BC Club in Bournemouth.
Arranged by Variety Wessex supporter Peter Jenkins, it was the second time Variety children had been invited to Remedy Oak.
The day started with a three mile walk round part of the course with the club’s head professional, Dominic Knight.
He explained the fairways, roughs, greens and bunkers, how each hole is ranked and the challenges given to players.
After a demonstration showing the correct way to swing a golfclub, each child had the chance to try out some shots on the golf range and also had a ride in a golf buggy.
The day also included a sandwich lunch with hot chips on the terrace, overlooking the lake and course.
The children also received tuition from assistant catering manager Marta on creating their own fizzy drinks as well as a lesson on coffee making by operations assistant Ryan and a look at the club’s office and shop with Aaron, the club’s operations manager.
Elisabeth Rawson-Jones, Pastoral Lead at Bethany CE Junior School, said: “These two visits to Remedy Oak Golf Club have been absolutely brilliant.
“Both days have given our pupils such memorable experiences and an introduction to a sport that they may not have been able to access without this opportunity.
“Thank you, Frances and Variety Wessex, Peter, Dominic and everyone at the club for your welcome and for such an enjoyable day.”
Frances Cornelius, Chair of Variety Wessex, said: “A huge thank you to everyone at Remedy Oak Golf Club for giving these children such an interesting day.
“The individual tuition given by Dominic was fantastic as was the experience of seeing, at first hand, your beautiful course on such a lovely spring day.
“Peter, thank you for organising this second golf experience.
“What a fabulous day it has been for these children.”
The day was part of the Variety the Children’s Charity Great Day’s Scheme that aims to give disadvantaged children positive memories.
