Bournemouth MP Jessica Toale leads women’s safety initiative in the town centre

Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale is leading a local initiative to address women’s safety in the town centre.

An event will bring together experts and the community ahead of International Women’s Day.

Taking place on Thursday, 6 March 2025, from 4-5:30 PM, the event invites local women to join a panel discussion and group walk through Bournemouth Town Centre.

The session aims to spotlight key concerns about women’s safety and explore solutions through urban planning, public policy, and nightlife management.

The event comes at a time when concerns about public safety remain high, despite Bournemouth being statistically one of the safer towns in the UK.

Attendees will hear from an esteemed panel of experts:

Jessica Toale MP – With a background in international development and a strong passion for women’s rights, Toale is leading efforts to enhance safety and urban planning in Bournemouth’s town centre.

Veronica Barbaro (Design West) – A town planner with expertise in gender-sensitive urban design, Barbaro is involved in international research on women’s mobility and safety after dark.

Tina Symington (BCP Council) – As the Community Safety Manager, Symington plays a key role in crime reduction initiatives, including efforts to combat male violence against women and girls.

Vicky Sheppard (Town Centre Business Improvement District) – Newly appointed as Night-time Economy Co-ordinator, Sheppard works closely with bars, eateries, and entertainment venues to enhance safety in the nightlife scene.

Following the discussion, attendees will take part in a guided walk through Bournemouth Town Centre, allowing for real-time conversations about safety concerns, accessibility, and areas for improvement.

MP Toale emphasized the importance of hearing directly from local women: “Experiences of Bournemouth Town Centre vary widely, but for many women, safety is a pressing concern. Some are forced to alter their routines, while others avoid the area altogether.

“This event is an opportunity to listen, learn, and collaborate on meaningful changes. Our findings will be shared with national government, the council, and town planning networks to ensure women’s voices are at the heart of policy decisions.”
