Organisers of a women’s rights demonstration in Bournemouth say the event was a resounding success.

Around 250 took part in Saturday’s event, one of 19 marches held simultaneously across the nation.

They marched through Bournemouth town centre, starting at the Triangle, through the Lower Gardens and to the Pier Approach.

Several local speakers spoke on issues they’d faced including personal accounts of domestic violence, sexual abuse and gender based inequalities.

Organisers said the peaceful protest reflected the movement’s commitment to intersectional feminism, welcoming trans and non-binary participants and ensuring accessibility for all.

Attendees arrived with a sea of handmade signs, with messages on them such as ‘My Body, My Choice’, ‘Shame Must Change Sides’ and ‘Harassment is Not a Compliment’.

Sophie, one of the lead organisers for Bournemouth, said: “The march in Bournemouth demonstrated the power of community and collective action.

“Together, we have shown that the fight for equality and justice is alive and unstoppable.”
