Plans to raise over £2 million through a charge on hotel stays in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have been given the go-ahead.
31 accommodation providers – out of a potential 70 – took part in a ballot to set up up an Accommodation BID, based on the Business Improvement District idea.
Sixteen voted in favour. The turnout was just over 41 per cent.
It means BCP will become the first coastal destination to introduce an Accommodation BID.
The money raised will replace council funding.
It will be earmarked for international and domestic marketing, PR and events for leisure and business among other purposes.
Andy Lennox, Chair, Destination Management Board, said: “This is one of the most important moments in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch history. Tourism is a vital part of our ecosystem.
“A successful ‘yes’ vote today marks a moment in time where businesses now have the opportunity to enact change and push this beautiful area forward.
“Three Towns, One Destination.”
Speaking in February, Cllr Vikki Slade, BCP Council Leader, said: “We as a Council welcome the industry’s pro-active approach and are excited at the prospect of working in partnership with the proposed new Accommodation BID, to deliver a more productive and resilient visitor economy and destination management.
“As the Council moves to a new way of working, as an enabler rather than deliverer, we will do everything within our power to help the process to a successful conclusion.”
