50 firefighters tackle residential fire in Bournemouth Town Centre

A residential property in Westover Road Bournemouth had to be evacuated overnight as 50 firefighters tackled a fire on the 5th floor.

Ten fire engines attended the incident at 1.30am along with Ambulance crews who supported one resident suffering from smoke inhalation.

An investigation found that the fire had started accidentally in a converted electric bike within one of the flats.

Station Manager Shaun Milton said: “We know that e-bikes and e-scooters are increasingly popular, but it’s vital that owners understand what to look for when buying them, and how to charge them safely.

“Anyone buying an e-bike conversion kit should always purchase from a reputable seller, and check that it complies with British or European safety standards. You should also check that the various components are compatible.”

Group Manager Ant Bholah, who attended this incident said: “Firefighters were alerted to the fire after smoke detectors within the building activated. Thankfully this early warning gave all residents the time to evacuate.

“The cause of this incident is thought to be accidental, but a fire investigation continues. More information about fire safety at home can be found on our website.”
