Preparations underway for Canford Cliffs stabilisation

Following the cliff slip at Canford Cliffs in 2017, a contractor has been appointed to undertake stabilisation works.

Specialist contractor CAN Geotechnical has been appointed to carry out the proposed scheme which is anticipated to start in September 2020 for approximately nine months. Extensive monitoring and planning have been carried out in preparation.

The £2.5m cliff stabilisation scheme will involve using soil nails (up to 15m in length) to stabilise the cliff face. The majority of works will take place from the top of the cliff at Cliff Drive to help reduce the impact on visitors to the beach.

Councillor Vikki Slade, Leader of BCP Council said: “By making this investment, we can safeguard the future of our seafront and continue with our plans to improve and upgrade the visitor facilities at Canford Cliffs beach, such as converting the pavilion into a new café and public toilets.”

For the duration of the works, Cliff Drive will be partially closed with access for residents, emergency services and construction vehicles only. This will help ensure public and contractor safety and protect the special designation afforded to this area, a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. Additionally, to ensure we can bring the required equipment and machinery to site and store it, there will be a temporary removal of the 3-tonne weight restriction and closure of the zig-zag path to the beach. Canford Cliffs beach hut tenants will be advised separately about accessing and using their huts.

Pedestrian access to Cliff Drive will be maintained. While the zig-zag path to the beach is temporarily closed, access to the beach will continue via Flaghead Chine and Canford Cliffs Chine.
