{"id":62381,"date":"2023-01-09T10:09:16","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T10:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.bournemouthone.com\/?p=62381"},"modified":"2023-01-09T10:10:41","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T10:10:41","slug":"bcp-residents-urged-to-check-their-photo-id-ahead-of-mays-local-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.bournemouthone.com\/test\/bcp-residents-urged-to-check-their-photo-id-ahead-of-mays-local-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"BCP residents urged to check their photo ID ahead of May\u2019s local elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Voters in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area will need to show an accepted form of photographic identification at this year\u2019s local elections.<\/p>\n<p>The requirement to show photo ID at the polling station is a new condition, introduced under the UK Government\u2019s Elections Act, which comes into effect for the first time this May. <\/p>\n<p>BCP Council is urging Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole residents to make sure they are ready to vote in 2023\u2019s local elections by checking now for an accepted form of ID and bringing it with them to the polling station in May.<\/p>\n<p>Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers\u2019 licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person\u2019s bus pass.<\/p>\n<p>Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.<\/p>\n<p>If voters don&#8217;t have accepted photo ID, they can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a \u2018Voter Authority Certificate\u2019 later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Graham Farrant, Returning Officer at BCP Council said: \u201cWith council elections taking place in BCP on 4 May 2023, it is important that those who want to vote make sure they have an accepted form of ID. It may seem early but checking now means you will be ready to vote in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents who do not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate either online or by completing a paper application form when this service launches in a few weeks\u2019 time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who wants to have their say in the elections \u2013 or wishes to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate &#8211; must also be registered to vote by Monday 17 April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Residents can check to see if they are already on the electoral register and find out more information on BCP Council\u2019s elections at: <a href=\"https:\/\/bcpcouncil.gov.uk\/elections\">bcpcouncil.gov.uk\/elections<\/a>, by calling 01202 123400, or emailing elections@bcpcouncil.gov.uk<\/p>\n<p>Those needing to register to vote can do so at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-to-vote\">www.gov.uk\/register-to-vote<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Residents will not need to provide photo ID to vote by post.
