Young carers summit calls for support

A record number of delegates from across the UK attended the MYTIME Young Carers Education Summit at Bournemouth University to discuss new ways to support young carers in education.

The award-winning charity hosted its largest annual summit to date on 5 November, bringing together teachers, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders under the theme “Collective Effort, Lasting Change”.

Research from MYTIME earlier this year showed young carers face higher suspension and exclusion rates than their peers, highlighting the need for early intervention.

Guest speaker Professor Saul Becker, from Manchester Metropolitan University, praised the charity’s work and said the event helped strengthen the sector’s understanding of how to reduce inequalities for young carers nationwide.

Delegates took part in workshops exploring practical classroom strategies, the role of trusted adults, and inclusion in community spaces.

MYTIME also introduced its forthcoming Young Carer Champion Academy, which will build on the charity’s existing Level-Up Programme to extend its reach in schools nationally. The academy is due to launch in 2026.

Chief Executive Krista Cartlidge told delegates the event was a major step in ensuring every child receives the support they need to thrive. She said the progress made so far must now lead to “tangible support” that makes a lasting difference.

The summit also featured contributions from the charity’s Youth Action and Advisory Board, who shared lived experiences and outlined a partnership with the mental health platform Kooth.

MYTIME thanked Bournemouth University, all guest speakers and delegates for their contributions, and paid tribute to the young carers whose voices continue to shape its work.
