Bournemouth University helps citizen science project to protect local nature

Bournemouth University is taking a leading role in supporting citizen science, a new approach that empowers local residents to contribute to environmental research.

By launching a new online platform, the university is making it easier for people across Dorset and beyond to get involved in conservation efforts.

Citizen science relies on everyday people regardless of their scientific background to help collect large-scale environmental data.

This data plays a crucial role in monitoring biodiversity, tracking climate change, and informing conservation strategies. However, recruiting and training volunteers has always been a challenge.

That’s where Bournemouth University’s initiative comes in. The naturevolunteers.uk website connects local residents with a diverse range of environmental projects that match their interests and availability. Whether it’s a one-off beach clean or an ongoing wildlife survey, there are opportunities for everyone to take part in protecting the natural world.

To highlight the impact of citizen science and encourage more people to get involved, the university is showcasing the website at the Citizen Science Festival running till March 1st.
