A man has been jailed following a road traffic collision in Bournemouth that left a pedestrian with life-changing injuries.
Richard Dean Caines, 47 and of Bournemouth, was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 20 January 2023 after previously pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle while unfit through drugs, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.
He was also disqualified from driving for six years and five months.
Dorset Police received a report at 11.19am on Tuesday 8 November 2022 of a collision involving a white Nissan Micra and a pedestrian in Poole Road, Westbourne.
The pedestrian – a woman aged in her 50s – sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Nissan, which was being driven by Caines, was witnessed overtaking two vehicles before colliding with the victim on the wrong side of the road.
Police Sergeant Gareth Thomas, of the traffic unit, said: “The dangerous actions of Richard Caines have sadly resulted in a woman suffering long lasting impact.
“It is entirely unacceptable to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs as it poses a risk to motorists, as well as members of the public in the wider area.
“We will continue to pursue anyone who drives dangerously and will do all we can to ensure they face the consequences of their actions.”
