New ambulance hub opens in Ferndown

A new ambulance operations centre has officially opened in Ferndown.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust opened the Main Operating Base on 20 March as part of a wider programme to modernise facilities across the South West.

The purpose built site will act as a central hub for ambulance services in Dorset, bringing together staff and vehicles previously based at Bournemouth and Wimborne stations along with operational teams from St Leonards.

Construction of the facility began in spring 2025 and was delivered by regional contractor Stepnell.

The building includes office space, areas for ambulance preparation and maintenance and improved welfare facilities for staff.

John Martin, chief executive of the ambulance service, said the new base represents an important investment in staff and patients.

He said bringing teams together under one roof will strengthen collaboration and improve operational efficiency.

Officials say the new hub will help reduce travel time for crews and allow clinical teams to focus more on patient care.
