Cyclist taken to hospital following incident on Christchurch bypass

A cyclist was taken to hospital and the bypass closed following an incident in Christchurch this afternoon.

The male rider was in need of medical attention and was taken by ambulance to Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The dual carriageway was closed for over an hour eastbound between Purewell Cross and Somerford Roundabout.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police told Bournemouth One: “We received a report at 12.46pm from the ambulance service requesting assistance as it treated a male cyclist in need of medical attention on the eastbound carriageway of the Christchurch Bypass, between the Purewell Cross Roundabout and the Somerford Roundabout.

“Officers are in attendance and road closures (were) in place.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 12:23hrs on Friday 14 March to an incident in Christchurch.

“We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, and an operations officer to the scene. We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Royal Bournemouth Hospital.”

The road is now open again.
